Efficient water management has become one of the most critical challenges in modern agriculture due to increasing water scarcity, climate change, and growing food demand. Irrigation scheduling, which involves determining the appropriate timing and quantity of irrigation based on crop water requirements and soil moisture status, plays a significant role in improving water use efficiency and sustaining crop productivity. Proper irrigation scheduling minimizes water losses through evaporation, runoff, and deep percolation while ensuring that crops receive adequate moisture during critical growth stages. Various irrigation scheduling techniques, including soil moisture-based scheduling, evapotranspiration (ET)-based methods, climatological approaches, crop growth stage scheduling, and sensor-based precision irrigation, have been developed to optimize irrigation management. These techniques enhance water use efficiency, improve nutrient uptake, increase photosynthetic activity, and promote better crop growth and yield. Recent advances in precision agriculture, remote sensing, wireless sensor networks, geographic information systems (GIS), artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT)-based irrigation systems have further improved the accuracy and effectiveness of irrigation scheduling. Despite these technological developments, challenges such as limited farmer awareness, high installation costs, inadequate technical expertise, and variable climatic conditions continue to affect widespread adoption. This paper examines the principles and methods of irrigation scheduling, evaluates their influence on water use efficiency and crop yield, and discusses the challenges, technological advancements, and future prospects of efficient irrigation management for sustainable agricultural production.

Weed interference remains a primary constraint on global crop productivity, directly competing with field crops for essential resources such as water, light, nutrients, and space. As traditional reliance on synthetic herbicides faces mounting challenges—including the rapid evolution of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes, escalating regulatory restrictions, and increasing public concern regarding environmental and health impacts—the shift toward Integrated Weed Management (IWM) has become imperative. IWM integrates physical, cultural, biological, and chemical control tactics to achieve sustainable and economical weed suppression. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of current IWM practices in field crops, analyzing the efficacy of multi-tactical approaches in minimizing crop yield loss while reducing chemical dependency. We examine how cultural practices, such as optimized crop rotation, competitive cultivar selection, and precise nutrient management, synergistically enhance crop competitiveness against weeds. Furthermore, we explore the role of emerging technologies, including robotic weeding, precision spot-spraying, and AI-driven monitoring, in advancing the precision of IWM implementation. By synthesizing recent field trial data and long-term agro-ecological studies, this paper demonstrates that IWM not only maintains or improves yield stability but also fosters long-term soil health and biodiversity. The findings underscore that a transition to IWM is essential for sustainable agriculture, providing a robust framework to mitigate resistance and reduce the environmental footprint of modern weed management systems.
